Ami Skånberg Dahlstedt – A particular act of survival
With focus on the female dancer’s vulnerability through history, Ami Skånberg Dahlstedt has created a piece that glances backwards, inwards, forwards, and outwards. She uses movement, music and text to activate the silent archives she carries within herself, and which she shares with her dancing colleagues in Gothenburg and globally, after thirty-two years as a practitioner of various dance techniques. The performance will be presented in English.

Quote: the Fluxus piece Snowstorm N°1 (1965) by Milan Knizak simply instructs that ‘Paper gliders are distributed to an idle and waiting audience’. What results is a snowstorm of quietly gliding paper airplanes as the audience returns them back and forth and so on.

Ami Skånberg Dahlstedt, phD student at Department of Drama and Theatre, Royal Holloway, University of London, is a Swedish performer, choreographer, filmmaker and writer. Currently she is developing ways of incorporating traditional Japanese dance and theatre into her contemporary performances and films. Her artistic investigations concern gender constructions in Japanese theatre and dance, and the gender codified walk, suriashi. Her recent performance ”Dust falling, rain falling” was dedicated to the archived cross-gender performers Shirabyoshi, and the performance ”20xLamentation” looked at different schools of suffering in Christianity, Buddhism, modern dance, Kabuki, Noh, karaoke etc. Her documentary film on Japanese dance, The Dance of the Sun, is being shown around the world right now, for example at Dance For Camera in New York in 2015, and has recently been released on DVD.
